On 26–27 July 2026, the First International Roughness Workshop was held at the ISTM.
We were delighted to welcome 37 participants from 10 countries to KIT for two days of stimulating scientific discussions and exchange.

We welcome Dr. Tomos Rich at ISTM, who will conduct research with us for two years as part of a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdocs. He is working on laser-optical measurement techniques in turbulent boundary layers and expands the group of fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at ISTM. Patricia Sujar Garrido and Marco Raiola are both visiting us with Humboldt Research Fellowships for experienced researchers.
We congratulate the Akaflieg Karlsruhe on a successful project application in the Future Initiative Aerospace 2050 of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
As part of the state's aerospace strategy, student university groups were invited to present their ideas for innovative projects for the further development of aerospace.
Within the approved project, Akaflieg Karlsruhe will be working on a sailplane concept with an adjustable leading edge flap. To this end, the students will build a demonstrator whose aerodynamic properties will be measured in the wind tunnel. A wing will then be built and undergo a fracture test to verify the structural calculations.

The bachelor course 'Introduction to Numerical Fluid Mechanics' (available only in German language) receives the KIT Faculty Teaching Award 2024 for outstanding teaching.
This course covers a wide range of topics, from solution procedure theories and visualization methods to specialized areas such as laminar and turbulent flow, multiphase flow, and heat transfer. A main focus is on the practical application of these topics by learning the entire process of flow simulations – starting from preparation to execution and analysis – with an emphasis on research and engineering sciences.
You can join the course for the current summer semester 2024 on the ILIAS platform here. The first organizational office hour will take place on April 16 at 2:00 PM (Building 10.23, 6th floor, Room 609 + Zoom).
The student group Akaflieg and the ISTM offer a joint lecture that combines research-oriented studying and practical experience. Not only does the course "Aerodynamik" introduce students to the practical aspects of flying, but it also offers them the opportunity to have a test flight on a glider.
